Health Benefits and Uses

Garlic has claimed many  health benefits and medicinal properties have been claimed and it has been used extensively in herbal medicine . It's been considered by many to be a herbal "wonder drug", with a reputation in folklore for preventing everything from the cold  to the Plague! Amongst other things raw garlic is used by some assist in controlling high cholesterol . It can even be effective as a insect repellent.

Some people who want the claimed health benefits without the taste prefer to take garlic supplements. These pills and capsules have the advantage of avoiding bad garlic breath.

Garlic Health Facts

Many of garlic's properties have been backed up by modern scientific facts and research. There are two main medical ingredients which produce the garlic health benefits: we are primarily interested in Alliin which is a precursor to allicin. When takin in large doses it appears to work at keeping from having the rebound effect with your fat stores. Allicin it appears is not usable by the body after 6 days have passed from the date of harvesting. Where as Alliin seems to keep the bio-availability long term. Thus  The easiest way to accomplish this goal is to use an aged garlic extract. This seems to help keeping that rebound weight off.

Ear Infections
One other use that has been explored over the years is garlic oil's ability to be used to treat ear infections in children.
The method of delivery is extremely simple.
1 heat to body temperature by holding the bottle against the skin for 5 minutes.
2 deposit several drops in the ear while child is laying on their side.
3 Place cotton balls in the ear to prevent leaking.

Benefits

Although garlic is a broad-spectrum antibotic the bacteria in our bodies do not appear to develope resistance to garlic as they do to man-made pharmaceutical antibiotics.         This means that its  health benefits can continue over time rather than helping to breed resistant "superbugs".

Side-Effects

Even garlic isn't a perfect wonder drug. Apart from garlic breath there are  possible side effects,if used to excess.

Raw garlic is very strong, so eating too much could produce problems, for example irritation of or even damage to the digestive tract.

There are a some people with an allergy to garlic. Symptoms of garlic allergy include skin rash, temperature and headaches. Also, garlic could potentially disrupt anti-coagulants, so it's best avoided before surgery. As with any medicine, check with your doctor first and tell your doctor if you are using it.

Important: Research published in 2001 concluded that garlic supplements "can cause a potentially harmful side effect when combined with a type of medication used to treat HIV/AIDS". More details are available on the NIAID website.
